“Style Has Absolutely Nothing to do with Money”

I just got off the phone with 81-year-old Jacquie Tajah Murdock. She wanted to catch up and see what has been happening with Advanced Style. I told her that she has inspired many women to dress up and feel good about themselves. Jacquie was delighted to hear this. She wanted to share some more of her style philosophy and told me that,”Style has absolutely nothing to do with money. In fact, I buy many of my things at thrifts shops. For me style is about looking different from anybody else. Fashion is an art.”

  • I agree with your title and you are showing beautiful examples

  • She is absolutely right! Great post!

  • A girl that is both wise and stylish!
    Thanks for nice post!

    With love from

  • I am with Jacquie 100% there.

  • What a stylish lady, and you can certainly sense her youthful attitude. I agree, some of the most stylish women I've encountered were thriftstore shoppers….

  • I agree! Fashion for me is a daily art collage using clothing and accessories!!!

  • Ahh, well being a Madame of Thrift this title caught me eye.

Absolutely this is true – style has nothing to do with money, and anyone who thinks so doesn't know style!

    She looks so beautiful

  • I do so agree, wisdom, and confidence are always in vogue. The clothes just add the extra touch. Susan Cooper

  • lovely!β™₯

  • She looks amazing! And so full of joie de vivre! x

Sorry to disagree … I think she looks lovely and vibrant but I do not like her clothes. They do nothing for her. In fact, the clothes only look okeish becaue of her. I am sure that in another outfit she would be even more stunning.

  • OMG that quote was amazing and so damn true!

  • I love this blog, the focus is so different from everything else!

  • So true! So wise! Thank God for thrifting.

" … in another outfit she would be even more stunning…."

    Possibly !!!
YET: that's just another puzzle piece which makes up this lady!
If this makes her as or even more happy then so called better outfits – so be it and she will still be faaaar ahead of quite some people still searching for their happiness -despite their at times more 'expensive'/valuable looks. πŸ˜‰

  • beautiful!!!

  • Absolutely Fabulous! Love this blog and love the ladies in it… Great!

  • MJ

  • Stunning and inspirational! Love the sparkling blue headwear!

  • The title of this post says it all! Amazing, as expect.

YES! I shop at thrift stores too! Most of the best, more interesting unique things are there!

  • Amazing! They amaze me! πŸ˜€ Prettyyyyyy πŸ˜€

  • She is totally right! Great post as expected πŸ˜€

  • Estilo no tiene absolutamente nada que ver con dinero. Genial esa frasecilla. Abrazos.

  • Wise beautiful womam.
    So true what she said.

  • I love hearing this kind of advice from the older generation. Especially such stunning looks. I'd like to shop in her thrift shops. Mine don't seem to have that gorgeous style! πŸ™‚

Nice sentiment, but it's completely elitist and out of touch with reality. Is it simply coincidence that the women featured on this site live in some of the priciest zip codes in the country, and spend more on their accessories than most do on their mortgages? Nope, don't think so.

Try finding candidates for posts in, say, Detroit, or south Philly, or the Bronx, and then get back to me.

  • so true. πŸ™‚
    these ladies look amazing!

  • sorry, meant "this lady" looks amazing.
she would probably look good in almost anything, though. beautiful woman. πŸ™‚

  • so very true>

  • Love, love, love Jacquie and her clothes! She always looks so slim and graceful. You can tell she was a dancer. I think she has a great middle name, too! Would love to see a lot more of her on your site.

  • i guess people look best when they wear their personalities…And yes, money certainly has nothing to do with it…It's about how artistic one's taste is and how much one is ready to experiment with clothes and accessories!

It's great to see such amazing youthful zeal in the elderly! Looks like I in my 20s will have to take some serious fashion tips from them.. ;P

  • Totally agree with her!!
